when the day was done
we laughed and played
then laid to rest on the hill
that rose over the city
looked up at the sky
it was maroon at twilight
“the sunset is beautiful,”
and so are we,” i said.
“but i won’t be beautiful for long;
i may lose this battle.” he replied solemnly.
i sat up with furrowed eyebrows
my heart sinking
to the depths of my stomach
but i understood what he meant completely.
he was never meant for this world anyway.
at least that’s what he felt.
but this is typical for an angel,
they never truly belong on this wretched earth
“but where will i find you when i need you?”
“i’ll always be inside your mind.
that pretty, little, messy mind of yours.
the one that dreams up whole universes and galaxies,
the one that creates such beautiful art.”
“i’ll make the sky pretty for you.
on any night that you feel outnumbered,
i’ll make the stars shine brighter
and if the moon is around
then it will cheer you on too
and bathe you in its soft light.
in the darkness of the night
you can hide away and rest
i will shroud you
with everything that it takes
to make you feel okay.
and give love to all parts of you
even the ugly parts that you hate”
“i’ll be the wind, rain, the rushing river and still waters.
should you feel trampled on and dirtied,
please come outside
and the downpour will was you afresh
you will be infused with new hope.”
“i’ll be around you, you’ll never be alone.
and i’ll wait for you to join me
then we can be beautiful til the end of forever.”
and i rested my head upon his shoulder
took a deep breath in
watched the sun sink into the earth.
~in case space and time gets in the way, i will always find you again. ~
