i learned that
existing as a human being is dirty work
some might say it is a burden
others might say that it is an inconvenience.
so then, darling, may i ask
will you allow me to be inconvenienced
by you?
i will stay behind
and wait for you to tie your shoes
if you are a haunted house on the hill
then i will be the ghosts that cling
to every nook and cranny
if you are the ocean waves
then i will be the shoreline that you crash onto
every single time
if you feel weak and melt into my arms
then i would tell you that i like my shirt soggy
you can make a home out of me
and i will shield you
through the wildest winters
and violent dog days
take cover; there is a nice cozy room for you
in this heart of mine.
you could tell me every ugly thing about you
your rebounds and earthquakes and mistakes
and watch me wrap them in love
and say “you are enough.”
give me your worst nightmares
and your sweetest daydreams;
in this moment, do not turn away
let me see your face, lit through the darkness.
let me be inconvenienced by you.
