if we’re being honest

if we’re being honest
moments slipped away in august
felt like seconds by your side.
at the pier on Sunset Boulevard,
feet in the water
you ask me to sit a while with you
maybe tired to speak
but i, too, am fluent in silence.
my head upon your shoulder
as the breeze rearranges your hair;
it falls in place.

if we’re being honest
when you asked me to make you my fortress:
a safe place to rest on,
a steady place to let down
my defences,
i shed a tear in secret
but a different kind of tear
because this time i deserve it.
i can feel my bones mending,
my crushed soul returning,
my broken heart being put back together,
piece by delicate piece.
and i can finally breathe again;
head above water.

your majestic frame
slowly rises from the pier,
you take my hand in yours
“may i have this dance?”
i rest my head upon your chest
and you grab my waist ever so gently.
in that moment nothing else matters
as we waltz through the sunset,
into the glittery night sky
you spin me around then pull me in
the sunset painted you golden
but now the moon rises and you’re all aglow
i look up and think to myself
“even the moon knows.”

that if we’re being honest
i would love you as long as i live and breathe
and for a thousand lifetimes over,
till forever falls apart
